Stokes Bay SC Open Meeting, 6/7 May 2000. (Large spinnakers permitted)
The next UK Ranking event is at Stokes Bay on 6/7 May. Stokes Bay is on the Solent, at the west end of Gosport. Approach from M27 Junction 11, through Fareham, following Gosport signs on A32 for 3 or 4 miles, then right at a multi-way roundabout when signed for Alverstoke and Stokes Bay. Past the naval training places, another couple of roundabouts and you are there - a lovely big grassy area for visiting boats. Camping permitted for competitors.
Saturday: 1200 first start, 3 races.
Sunday: 1030 first start, 3 races.
Contacts: Tim Martin 01329 288002
Accommodation list from Debbie Wood at the club: 023 9258 1513 (T&F) or SBSC@messages.co.uk
This is our first main event on the sea, and an opportunity to experiment with the large spinnaker. Friendly club; keen sailing; it should be a good event.
Other Stokes Bay SC Events:
Bank Holiday Weekend, 29/30 Apr & 1 May.
For the weekend before the open meeting, we are invited by Stokes Bay SC to join their club racing. This is the May Bank Holiday weekend, and afterwards we can leave our boats in the club compound for the following weekend. Programme:
Saturday 29 April: 1500 start.
Sunday 30 April: 1030 start.
Monday 1 May: 1100 start.
In each case there is one race scheduled, plus additional races if numbers warrant it.
(Our thanks to SBSC for this offer.)
Stokes Bay SC "Round the Fort" Charity Race, 14 May 2000
Sunday 14 May, mass start 1200. A number of club 505s will be taking part in this popular local event, and non-members are welcome.
Stokes Bay Solent Pursuit Race Weekend, 10/11 June 2000
To complete the picture at Stokes Bay, the annual Solent Pursuit Race is on Sunday 11 June (505 start around 1130), preceded on the Saturday by the Gafirs Handicap Race, at 1500.
505 British Association Committee Meeting, 3 April 2000
The following items are of particular note to members:
a.. Changes to ranking factors. Despite the clash with Europa Cup events, it was agreed that important UK events should retain their normal ranking. Thus Stone SC (3/4 June) and Lee-on-Solent SC (24/25 June) will be ranked at 1.25, as in previous years.
b.. Reminder: Enter for Abersoch before 1 May to avoid the extra entry fee.
c.. Jim Berry, the President, is negotiating the possibility of a non-ranking open meeting at Poole on 10 June. (To be confirmed.)
d.. Durban. Container loading for the Worlds will be on about 20 Sept. Book your place with Paul Young Rondar@compuserve.com. Cost will be about GBP200 to cover inland transport costs (the freight charge is sponsored by Mediterranean Shipping Corporation). We have been allocated two containers, but if we apply early enough, we believe more could be available.
e.. Nationals 2002. A vacancy at Mounts Bay for the last week of July 2002 has been taken by the class.

Grafham Water SC - Training Weekend, 8/9 April
Sam Neal reports:
Eleven 505's enjoyed a weekend's sail training on 8th and 9th of April, under the guiding hand of Ian Pinnell. Saturday morning was spent calibrating the boats to the P&B tuning sheet, with further discussion of sail setting, starting, tacking and gybing before going afloat. The subsequent on the water session was blessed with only 5 knots of wind. Three short races were held with all boats undergoing the scrutiny of Ian Pinnell's video.
Sunday morning produced much breezier conditions in the region of 18-20 knots, four more short races were held again with video coverage, several high quality capsizes were caught on film and most boats featured in this activity. The most important session of the weekend followed - the video replay. This is where every one was proved fallible and got his or her chance to chew over anything that may have occurred to them, but most importantly Ian gave top tips to all and really did make everyone feel they will go faster.
Those attending were:
Pete and Steve Burwood
Dave Andrews and Tom Merry
Rob Napier and Jonathan Rennie
Miles Odell and Andrew Streeter
Chris Pearson and Frank Rainsborough
Sam and Karen Neal
Charlie Walters and Christian Diebitsch
Tom Clayton and Dennis Hyatt
Martin and Ros Davies
Jim and Rich Berry
Eamon and Mark Cuthbert
(Our thanks to Ian, and to Sam for organising the event - Rob)
505 UK Inland Championship, Grafham Water Sailing Club, 15/16 April
Ian Pinnell reports:
Thirty 505's made the trip to Grafham Water for the opening event of the year. For many this was an opportunity to blow away the winter cobwebs prior to heading off to the South of France and a Europa Cup event the following weekend. Although it was meant to be spring, competitors were greeted with a gusty force 4 to 5 and temperatures that failed to reach 5 degrees. With a slight port bias on the line Ian Pinnell and Nick Powell made a near perfect start and were never to be caught, leading the first race from start to finish. Dave Smithwhite and Neil Fulcher took second and Richard Sims and Simon Wood took third. After a break for lunch many of the competitors decided that an early shower was the order of the day and decided not to compete in the next two races. For those who did compete there was some exhilarating sailing to be experienced. In the second race first and second places were a repeat of the mornings race whilst in third place Dave Peacock and Chris Hewkin started to find their legs. The third race saw Pinnell once again take an early lead only to capsize on the first gybe mark. In the end Peacock took first place, Pinnell took second and Stuart Turnbull and Jason Lunn third.
Sunday couldn't have been more different to Saturday with clear blue skies and light breezes. The change in conditions also led to a change at front of the fleet. Debbie Jarvis sailing with her husband Mark Darling won race four with Charles Walters and Christian Diebitsch taking second place and Sam Neal and Andy Johnson taking third. Jarvis was obviously finding the conditions to her suiting as she won race five with Sims taking second place and Terry Scutcher and his new crew, Ray Chittock taking third place. The final race saw a slight increase in the wind to marginal trapezing conditions. Clive Robinson and Gary Cawthorn took the honours with Jarvis in second and Sims take third.

505s Sixties and Seventies Reunion, 15 April 2000
Hugh Bourne organised a reunion in Burnham-on-Crouch for 505 sailors from the sixties and seventies. Unfortunately for us old lags who struggled through three windy races at Grafham, it was difficult to attend. Nevertheless Jim and Maggie Berry made it, and report that it was a splendid party, very well attended. I hope to receive a full report with an attendance list in time for the next circular.
