Although not a Europa Cup event this year, this is one of our main open events (ranking 1.25). It is one of only two before the European Championship at SCYC Abersoch in August. And it is being sponsored by Tacktick Limited - see below for their interesting offer.
The club is on Sandy Point at the easternmost end of Hayling Island. The club gives the following directions on www.hisc.co.uk (where there are also maps):
Take the A3023 (Havant road) sign posted Hayling Island from the M27, proceed on the A3023 over Langstone bridge to a roundabout (approx 31/4 miles). At the roundabout take the first exit left to Mengham / Eastoke (Church road). Drive straight through Mengham village (Elm grove) to the seafront (approx 1 mile). At the T-junction on the seafront turn left to Sandy/ Eastoke end, then drive along the seafront for approx 1/4 mile. The road curves to the left, take the first right on the bend into Southwood road. Drive to the end of Southwood road until you come to a dead end sign (approx 1 mile). Turn left here into Bosmere road. Drive along Bosmere road and at the T-junction turn right into Sandy Point road then take the first left into Bracklesham road. You will find HISC entrance about 1/4 mile along Bracklesham road. (In summary, keep going eastwards on the larger roads until you reach Sandy Point - Rob.)
There is accommodation at the club (for full details, see www.hisc.co.uk). There are several bedrooms, modest but respectable, also extensive bunk-room accommodation. Book ahead with the club. Dinner and breakfast are available in the dining room, and lunches/snacks in the wet-bar. Camping is not allowed on site. Lots of B&B on the island, also campsites, caravan parks etc.
A great place to sail, excellent sailing waters, very experienced club, plenty of space for kids inside and out. Allow time to sail out - it can be slow; and mug up your tidal information beforehand - the tidal flows in the bay are peculiar.

Hayling Island SC Open Meeting, continued: Sponsorship by Tacktick Limited
James Hewitt, UK Sales Advisor, is calling us:
Attention all 505 sailors. FREE! Race with a Tacktick compass during the 505 open meeting at Hayling Island Sailing Club. As I am sure you are all aware there is a 505 open meeting at Hayling Island Sailing Club over the weekend of the 8th and 9th of July and will be sponsored by Tacktick Limited. Tacktick would like to take this opportunity to offer 505 sailors the chance to sail with one of our Electronic compasses for the duration of this event. The compass itself is extremely easy to use and also very simple to attach, as there is no need for any drilling. "5 minutes will see the unit securely mounted". All boats taking part in this event will be required to have two Tacktick stickers on the sail or bow of the boat, these will be given to you when you enter. Prizes will then presented to the winning team at the prize giving. If you would like to take up the offer of a loan compass please contact James Hewitt on 01243 379 331 or email me at sales@tacktick.co.uk, the sooner you get in touch with me the better as there will only be a limited number of units available. A small but very competitive fleet of 505's gathered for the open meeting at Lee-on-Solent over the weekend of the 24th and 25th of June. The first race was started in a very shifty force 2-3. It was a Robinson family benefit at the top mark with Clive leading from son Christopher. However, by the end of the first run Hector Cisneros had come through to take the lead, only to lose out up the next windward leg to both Clive Robinson and Andy Williams. Robinson stayed in front to the finish and although there was much place changing behind, Williams held onto second from the fast finishing Dave Smithwhite.
Race two started in less wind and again it was Clive Robinson leading at the first mark but as the breeze increased behind him, he was unable to hold off the pursuing pack and it was Cisneros, recovering from a poor first beat, who took the lead at the bottom mark. Robinson remained in second place up until the final run when Simon Payne peeled away from the leading pair and made a huge gain to lead at the last mark, though trying to lay the finish line under spinnaker proved to be a mistake and Cisneros sneaked back through to win. Robinson would later be disqualified for an incident at the start which promoted Williams to third.
Sunday dawned windless and so overall results were to be calculated on the two races sailed the previous day.
Overall results: 1st Hector Cisneros and Lawrence Crispin 2nd Andy Williams and Andy Edmonds 3rd Simon Payne and Bill Masterman
The Fiveoh was designed in 1954 by the English architect John Westell. The class grew very rapidly. All boats were wooden built whether it be in England or in France during the first years. For a year and half by now, the French 5o5 class is listing all the remaining wooden 5o5. To date 27 boats are listed and have been fixed in order to maintain "Le patrimoine maritime". Where are all the wooden 5o5 still existing over the world?
The French Class will organise the first ever dedicated regatta for those superb wooden 505. All wooden 505s are welcomed including Galettis, de Kergroix, Parkers,... All teams from any countries (England, Swiss, Belgium, Germany, Danemark, Sweden,.....) are welcome to attend the regatta. The venue is the Yacht Club de L'ile de France in the parisian area along the river Seine where the first 505 ever built was tested in 1953.
In addition to the regatta itself an entire new exhibition will be on display together with films 8mm. Several boats being repaired will be on display too.
Pre inscription: if you are interested in participating, please let me know with e-mail, 5o5 number, year, make and any relevant information. A more detailed notice of race will be wired later on. - Jean Baptiste Dupont jbdupont@compuserve.com.
Nineteen 505's from Britain, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium made the trip to Nieuwpoort in Belgium for the fifth in this years Europa Cup series. Competitors were greeted with 25 knot winds from the South West with lumpy seas for the first two races on Friday, held on a triangular course with a double length run and a short final beat. A pattern was quickly to emerge as Pinnell and Powell won the first two races and Bohm and Roos took second place in both races. The pecking order may have extended further down the fleet as Scutcher and Tew took third place in the first race but were unable to compete the second due to Tew suffering from an uncomfortable trapeze harness! Instead third place was taken by Achterberg and Acterberg.
Conditions on Saturday remained much the same, although the wind had moved slightly further round to the West. Again it was Bohm and Roos and Pinnell and Powell who were the crews to beat. Bohm just led Pinnell around the first mark in race three, only to capsize whilst hoisting his kite and subsequently relinquishing his lead. Despite managing to pull back to second place further bad news awaited Bohm when he came ashore and discovered that he had been disqualified for jumping the start. Second place then went to Roos and Linnemann, with Scutcher taking third place. Races four and five were again won by Pinnell, with Bohm taking second place in both.
Sunday saw a marked change in conditions with the wind moving to the North West and easing to fifteen to eighteen knots. Despite the change in conditions Pinnell and Powell continued their winning ways with two further wins and having done enough to secure the regatta decided to head ashore without sailing the last race. Bohm had a further two second places and a win in the last race to give him second overall. Positions three, four and five though were much closer. In the end Scutcher just beat Achterberg to third place and Roos took fifth place overall.
