Poole SC, Postponed again

Sorry - the one-day open meeting at Poole has been postponed again, to a date to be decided, probably in July. Jim Berry is arranging the event with the club and wants to be there, but is having a cataract operation to his right eye in mid June. (Best wishes for full success with that, Jim.) So, again, watch this space for more information.

Lee-on-Solent SC, 24-25 June 2000

Lee-on-Solent SC is on the east side of Lee-on-Solent. Leave the M27 at Junction 11 and follow the A27 then A32(South) through the outskirts of Fareham. Being in the correct lane can be tricky; when leaving the motorway junction take the middle lane, but get into the left lane for the 2nd turning left for the A32 (under the railway viaduct). Half a mile after the viaduct, follow the signs to Lee-on-Solent, peeling right off the A32 at an overpass onto the B3385. After about 3 miles you reach the sea front. Turn left. The club is about half a mile along, with a nice grassy area for boat parking.

Chris Sands, the Club Manager advises:

Start of first race Sat. 1300hrs
Start of first race Sun. 1030hrs
The registration desk will be open from 0900-1200hrs Sat.

Camping is not allowed at the club but there is a campsite nearby tel no. 023 92502611. Dogs are allowed, however not inside the main clubhouse. The main club house is situated on the sea front (46 Marine Parade East) between the boat compound and the Belle View Hotel. It is a big white, glass fronted building.

There is an evening meal of roast beef or vegetable schnitzel available for £4-00 per head. There is no entertainment booked however the bar will be open all day until approx. 2300hrs.

It is one of the main UK ranking events (ranked at 1.25), and we hope will be well attended.

Burton SC (Foremark Reservoir), 20/21 May - Training and Mini Open Meeting

Martin Goult reports:

On the weekend of May 20/21 Burton Sailing Club hosted a training day run by Ian Pinnel on Saturday followed by a mini open meeting on Sunday. The event was held in light to medium winds with marginal trapezing being the norm throughout. The training made us all think more about our downwind sailing and to spend more time on boat maintenance with centreboards getting more attention than they usually do around the boat park at Burton. A series of short races were held followed by some tacking practice all watched and videoed by Ian to be used as evidence against us later.

The races starting on Sunday had a F1 Monaco feel with overtaking being difficult around the 'tight' Burton buoys with everyone very reluctant to give up any position easily, the main difference to messrs Coultard and co was that everyone in the fleet had the ability to sail away and win the race once in front. In the first race it was John Webster and Eric Ironmonger who won the first beat and never looked back to sail away to a stylish and comfortable win. Second place was held by Martin Goult with pressure being applied all the time by Dave Peacock, Clive Robinson's confrontation with the first mark, gave him a place to hide down the pack, from which there was no recovery and would later prove critical.

In the second race it was Martin Goult and Gordon Russell who led at the first mark and went on to take the race from Clive Robinson. This set things up nicely for the final race with Clive Robinson needing a win to put the pressure on Martin Goult, the speculation in the club house before hand was that if he did not achieve this if would be the first time in history that a 505 event had been held on Burton without Clive winning a single race. History was not to be made with Clive winning despite a 180' wind shift at the end of the race closing the field up. Dave Peacock held on for second to take third overall and a third place by Martin Goult was enough to win the event by having a better discard.

Thanks again to Burton Sailing Club for hosting the event and for Ian Pinnel in providing his expertise and time to run training sessions. The only shame is that there were very few visiting boats taking the opportunity to learn from the UK's and one of the world's leading 505 sailor .

505 Short Course Championship, Stone SC, 3/4 June 2000

Mike Holt reports:

Over the weekend of June the 3rd and 4th a fleet depleted to 18 boats due to a clash with the slightly more exotic draw of a European Cup meeting in Riva came to the line to contest the Stone Open and Short Course Championships. Saturday's weather was sunny with a light sea breeze over a strong spring ebb tide. Clive Robinson and Gary Cawthorn totally dominated with 2 wins from 2 races with Hector Cisneros and Laurence Crispin the only boat closely challenging with a 2, 4.

Sunday however dawned bright but with 12-14 knots of wind from the South West. Race 3 saw Ian Montague and Geoff Kimber move into contention with a win while Robinson posted a 5th with Cisneros finishing 3rd. Race 4 saw Mike Holt and Ian Godfrey start showing some speed, with a win, Robinson and Cisneros still however the pace makers with 3rd and 4th respectively. Holt followed this with a win in race 5 chased all the way by Cisneros in 2nd with Robinson further back down in 6th.

So as usual at Stone it was going to go down to the last race, in fact it went down to the last mark of the last race. Robinson believing that it was only Holt who could beat him sailed him down the fleet on the first beat, going around the windward mark towards the back with Holt second from last, Cisneros was now at the front only to be sent home by the race committee for an OCS leaving the race wide open for Martin Goult and Gordon Russell to win comfortably. Meanwhile Holt was on the comeback moving quickly up the fleet, passing the necessary last 2 boats to move into 2nd at the last leeward mark to win the meeting by 1 point from Cisneros, with Robinson another point back in 3rd.

As ever a well run event both on and off the water with a very good short course format.

Forthcoming European Events

French National Championship, Hyères Bay, 12-15 July 2000

The French Nationals are popular with a number of UK members. This year they are at Base Nautique Londaise, on the French Riviera at La Ronde les Maures. Safety equipment required: tow rope (10m long, 6mm dia.), two buoyancy vests, rudder lock and compass. Otherwise, I can see nothing unusual in the NOR. Contact me if you want more details.

Scandinavian Championship & Europa Cup, Roskilde, Denmark, 19/20/21 May

Tom Bojland reports from Denmark:

6 races was sailed in al kind of conditions, from 5 knots to 25, sun and rain etc, all wery exciting and Schonherr/Friis won in close combat with Rosen/Wenrup and Moller/Bojsen Moller.

Roskilde Sailing Club made an excellent event with free breakfast, lunch and dinner all days, even a motorboat with free beer to the crews after they passed the finishing line was provided. Many clubs can learn something here!!!!!

Sadly the Germans decided to stay home, and missed and great event and some great racing, actually a bit disappointing for us Danes and the Swedes as well, because we often move more than 50% of our active fleet to Germany to make some great racing there and support the German class.

We certainly look forward to go back to Roskilde one day, those folks know how to make a good event.

Charter Boat Wanted

Wanted - Boat for European Championship at Abersoch

Ian Pinnel asks:

We have an entry for Abersoch from Patrick McCosh (Zimbabwe) but he needs to borrow or charter a boat. You may remember him. He has 8445, Andy Williams' old boat, in Zimbabwe. He finished 30's in Quiberon. He his the best Zim/South African sailor (he is English). He has just bought a new suit of sails so he's just looking for hull & rig.

If anyone is willing to oblige, please contact Ian Pinnell at pinbax@skynet.co.uk or me at rob.napier@clara.net.
