Recent Events

Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy, 22/23 July

Nic Powell reports:

The 505 class moved to the Weymouth over the weekend of 22/23rd July for the final open meeting prior to next months European Championships. This year the racing was run from the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy in the old Naval base which proved to have excellent facilities.

On Saturday the sailors were greeted with an easterly force 5 and sunshine. Two races were scheduled inside the harbour and it was once again Ian Pinnell and Nick Powell who proved the boat to beat. Having been asked by the race officer if they would step in as the gate boat after Jim Berry had to return to shore to replace a ripped mainsail, they managed to round the windward mark in first place and succeeded in maintaining their lead until the finish. Second place was taken by Dave Smithwhite and Neil Fulcher who were hot on the tail of Pinnell until they capsized bearing away round the windward mark. Richard Sims and Simon Wood took third place.

The second race on Saturday was run on a windward/leeward course and it was again Pinnell/Powell who were first round the windward mark. This time though things didn't go their way as they bore away and the kicking strap broke. This meant that Smithwhite moved through to first place which he maintained to the finish. Richard Lord/Simon Lake took Second and Andy Williams/Andy Edmonds took third.

Sunday saw a change in conditions with the wind easing to a force 3 to 4 and moving to the north east. Race three again saw Pinnell take the winners gun and Smithwhite take second. However Terry Scutcher and Richard Tew found the slightly lighter conditions more to their liking and took third place.

Race four proved to be very close with Pinnell leading from Smithwhite for the majority of the race with Scutcher and Debbie Jarvis/ Dan Johnson chasing hard. Despite his best efforts Smithwhite was passed on the last run when Jarvis and Scutcher gybed early and caught a gust of wind. Final results of race four were Pinnell first, Jarvis second and Scutcher third.

The last race of the weekend saw Scutcher take the early lead from Pinnell only to lose it at the gybe mark when the spinnaker pole became entangled in the downhaul rope. Rob Napier and Jonathan Rennie took third place with some clever down wind sailing and what appeared to be a very large spinnaker.

French National Championship, Hyères Bay, 12-15 July 2000

Jean-Baptiste Dupont reports:

Awful conditions for the French won by Ian Pinnell in winds over 30 knots at times.... and very lumpy sea state... Even Philippe Boite could not cope with the conditions and finished second to Ian.... No need to tell you that none of the French are in favour of a great kite after such a windy championship.

Avec trois victoires et une place de sixieme, Ian Pinnell and Nick Powell ont survole l'Open de France 2000 !

The French 5o5 National Championship was held over the 14 July long week end in the great Hyeres bay surrounded West by the Presqu'ile de Giens, the islands of Porquerolles and Port Cros to the South and le Fort de Bregancon on the East where Jacques Chirac spends his hollidays every summer. The championship was hosted for the first time by the Yacht Club de La Londe les Maures in a very convincing manner with great roses and beautiful dancers.

But what will remain in memories will be the very challenging wind and sea state conditions. The Mistral was blowing consistently over 20 knots but for one race and the sea was very lumpy giving very challenging spinnaker runs. In those difficult conditions the British champions demonstrated a second to none performance winning 3 races out of 4. They miss the second race only failing to get a 180 degree wind shift which brought to the line the peloton leaving the leaders windless and powerless. The French crew Philippe Boite and Jean Luc Muzellec finished second overall after having finished second to Ian in most of the races. In doing so they win their 16th French title since 1982 !!!

Given the challenging conditions only 10 teams out of the 30 were able to finish the 4th and last raced race. And given the Mistral was blowing consistently over 30 knots on the last day, races were cancelled on Saturday, allowing participants to return home earlier than anticipated.

Ian and Nick are now aiming at winning the European before shipping the boat to Durban to compete in the World 2000 in November. They will certainly be a difficult team to beat this year given the very impressive lead they were able to gain with their new improvements.

Europa cup, Kiel Week, Germany, 17-20 June 2000

Further to the results given in the last circular, here is the report:

A fleet of forty four 505s from Germany, Denmark and Britain competed for the Europa Cup event which is part of Kiel Week. There are five Europa Cup events held throughout the season with the best three results counting for a competitor's overall position.

The German 505 fleet is thriving with young sailors from the 470 and 420 classes. Not only is the class on the increase but the standard is also rising. The racing was held on one of the outside courses which meant good winds away from the immediate influence of the land, although it meant a long sail to the start. The local team of Wolfgang Hunger and Holger Jess dominated the light air series with Hunger winning his 13th Kiel Week. Incidentally, he also has two 470 world championships to his credit.

Five races were held with Hunger and Jess winning four of them. The other race was one by Stefan Bohm crewed by Gerald Roos. Bohm also comes from the 470 class.
