The Weymouth Dinghy Centre has moved to Portland itself, and we will be at their new location, the Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy, at the former Royal Naval Air Station Osprey, Portland. From Weymouth, take the A364 to Portland Bill. At the first roundabout on the Isle of Portland, go hard left into the Air Station. Along on the left is a brick building with dinghies around. I am told you cannot miss it.(?)
Saturday: first race 1300, 2 races. Sunday: first race 1100, 3 races.
"The Academy site of about 12 acres offers improved and much larger facilities. Large car and dinghy parks. Three large launching ramps. Separate parking areas for windsurfers and sailors. Larger clubroom, with changing rooms/showers, large briefing room, lecture rooms, press and race control offices in lots of space. For more information, contact wey.sail.centre@lineone.net."
Camping is not allowed there, but they will allow camping at the old Dinghy Centre site. If that seems a bit stony and bleak, join us at Bagwell Farm Touring Park, Chickerell (Tel: 01305 782575) which is in pleasant rolling scenery a few miles away, where most 505 teams seem to go. Otherwise, lots of B&B and other campsites in the area.
This is the last major open meeting before the Europeans at SCYC Abersoch, and is ranked 1.25. It is also our last open meeting at which the experimental spinnaker may be used before voting on it. Get that old kite converted for the event, or at least prepare your mast in case you can borrow one (see Circular 2 April 2000).
The entries received by 7 July 2000 are listed at the end of this circular.
Race two saw similar conditons but this time it was Pinnell who went clear at the windward mark with Payne second and Debbie Jarvis and Dan Johnson third. Payne closed on the reaches and moved into the lead on the second beat, covering Pinnell to the finish with Jarvis third.
Sunday saw winds of around 20 knots which made crossing the Hayling bar an exciting experience and windward/leeward courses set . With slightly less wind at the start Hector Cisneros and Lawrence Crispin lead at the first mark with Smithwhite second and Payne third. Gybing on the run, Cisneros twisted his spinnaker and allowed Smithwhite into the lead but Payne pulled through to win with Smithwhite second and Jarvis third.
Walters led Race 4 for the first lap but was passed by Payne and Smithwhite, eventually taking third. Payne and Masterman, not needing to sail the final race gratefully headed home for an early shower.
With second place up for grabs the final race saw Smithwhite surfing down the run in first place but capsizing dramatically whilst gybing. Cisneros took the lead and hung on to claim race five with Walters taking second claiming second overall. Smithwhite remounted, came in tenth and took third place overall.
With the European Championships at Abersoch in August and the promise of some 70 boats, the weekend was an excellent warm up regatta.

The 505 class completed a full series of seven races, six of which were held in classic Lake Garda conditions, sun and 20 to 30 knots of breeze. Race 7 was held in approximately 15 knots.
The racing was very close throughout the regatta with short tacking close to the cliffs and chasing the strongest wind bands downwind. The course was a sausage followed by a square that gave a good variety of downwind sailing.
The winners were the Moller brothers from Denmark with 13 points followed by Dave Smithwhite and Neil Fulcher from the UK with 13.2 points. The Gorge brothers from Germany finished third. The top three boats never finished outside of the top five that made for a cliffhanger of a last race with all three capable of winning the regatta. The overall results were not settled until the last run of the last race when the Moller Brothers picked up a gust close to the leeward mark and managed to overtake 2nd placed Fili Stockmann from Germany to put a boat between himself and Smithwhite which won him the regatta. Vernon Ralston and Simon Spratt from Thorpe Bay Yacht Club sailed a distinguished series to finish 7th overall never finishing outside of the top ten and showing awesome upwind speed.
