1996 Australian Championships and Preworlds: Race 8

Townsville, Queensland, Australia....

Another shitty day in paradise. Townsville continues to be hot and very sunny. The breeze was lighter today, but roughly from the same direction it has always been from.

There were holes on the course, and staying in the higher wind was key to the race.

Krister Bergstrom won the second race of the pre-worlds, making it two in a row. The Nicholsons rounded the first mark out of the top ten and were not able to fight their way through. The generally lighter conditions, though still planing upwind at times, meant that speed differences upwind were less than on windy days.

Once again, there were problems with the first gate start, and the fleet was called back for another start, getting off OK about 2:40 PM. A protest concerning the start is being heard as I write this, and is holding up final results.

There are two sets of scores for the last two races, as they are scored with Australians only for the Australian Championship, and scored with everyone for the pre-world championship. With two wins in two races Krister Bergstrom is looking strong in the pre-worlds.

Tomorrow is the last race of both the Australian Championship and the pre-worlds. There are two days off and then the World Championships starts on the 12th.
