Images of the Sea-Land 43rd International 505 World Championship

David Crawford, Event Chairman Sailing out through the channel to the racing area. Parts of the channel near HYC are quite narrow, and have to be shared with ferrys - including very fast catamaran ferrys - that take essentially the entire width of the channel.
Part of a gate start. The pathfinder (rabbit) is on port, followed by the gate launch. Two 505s (to the left) have already ducked the gate launch, two are very close to starting. Part of the fleet blast reaching down the first (tight reach). 505s race a 55 degree gybe angle course at the World Championship.
The leaders round the gybe mark, with the pack closing at warp speed. More of the pack rounding. Getting around the mark, gybed, and back up to warp speed is very important. If someone inside or close astern out gybes you and rolls you, you may lose a number of boats before you can climb up to the passing lane.

First reach in light air. The leaders approach the gybe mark. And gybe around it.
While the leaders have a little spacing between them. The density seems to be increasing as the pack approaches.
Approaching a mark on a broader reach. Part of the fleet on the second reach after gybing, with more of the pack approaching.

Increasing 505 density.. not much air, and everyone wanting to be inside at the mark. And not blanketed by several inside boats. The mark in the foreground is currently not in use, and is attached to the mark boat the photographs were taken from.

What would you tell the jury? Despite having 106 or 107 505s racing, there were not recalls in 14 races, and only one 505 damaged to it could not race. Planing hard and fast on a (tight) reach.
Early in a gate start. At the left of the image, the pathfinder is on port followed by the gate launch. A portion of the fleet waits on starboard for the opportunity to duck the gate launch and start. Tyler Moore/Scott Ikle get partially airborne over the gate launches wake. The ferry in the background steamed through the gate start, but all 505s were able to get out of the way and still get clean starts, as the ferry went astern of the pathfinder through a gap in the fleet.
Nick Trotman/Mike Mills are the pathfinder. A 505 has just started by ducking the gate launch on starboard. Several teams on a tight reach working to get over the wave they are on and into the next trough.
