HYANNIS, MASS. - After rounding the first turning mark just outside the top ten teams, Nick Trotman and Mike Mills from Massachusetts and Rhode Island worked their way through to win the 3rd race of the Sea-Land 43rd International 505 World Championship. The British team of Mark Upton-Brown/Ian Mitchell led for most of the race, but sailed toward the wrong turning mark after a course change signaled by the Race Committee. Howard Hamlin/Mike Martin from California finished 3rd. Jim Hunt/Nick Beloe from Great Britain finished 4th, while Ian Pinnell/Nick Powell also from Great Britain finished 5th. These finishes are subject to a protest, which could alter the top positions.
These provisional finishes put the Trotman/Mills team in the lead counting all three races run so far, with Upton-Brown/Mitchell 2nd, Pinnell/Powell 3rd and Ian Barker/Dan Cripps of Great Britain 4th.
Nantucket Sound gave the 107 505s another terrific day of racing, with 12-15 knots from the west-northwest. The shallow water resulted in steep waves, which the 505s planed upwind over easily. The four reaches were tight and fast, rewarding the top team's technique and boat handling.
One hundred seven 505s are registered in the Sea-Land 43rd International 505 Class World Championship, making this the largest 505 World Championship in the history of the 505 class.
