HYANNIS, MASS. - 505s seem to come alive when the wind tops 20 knots. Today, a cold front swept through Hyannis and delivered a blustery 20 knot plus northerly that made for sensational sailing on Nantucket sound. By day's end, Ian Barker and Daniel Cripps from Great Britain scored a first place finish with the team of Nick Trotman and Mike Mills coming in second. New Englander's Trotman and Mills continue to lead the regatta by 7.4 points ahead of Barker (the 1993 World Champion with Tim Hancock) and Cripps. These results are provisional.
The start of the race was delayed by two hours today after the strong cold front brought with it gusts of 35 knots. The race committee opted to hold off to allow the wind to slack off, and it did around 1 p.m. Conditions were nearly perfect at race time, as boats surfed up wind and on the reaches. Racing was tight as boats cruised off of waves and many wiped out at the jibe mark. 505s planed up wind at what seemed like warp speed despite short high chop caused by wind against tide in shallow Nantucket Sound.
"Today is the kind of day that 505 sailors live for," said Ali Meller, 505 international 505 Class Yacht Racing Association Vice President. "You're going unbelievable fast, you can't see because of the spray in your eyes, you're just feeling the force and hanging on."
