TOP TEAMS STRUGGLE IN SHIFTY PUFFY SOUTH-WEST BREEZE, TROTMAN/MILLS ELEVENTH, BARKER/CRIPPS RETIRE

HYANNIS, MASS. - Mother Nature dealt competitors in the Sea-land 43rd International 505 World Championship an interesting hand of cards today. In contrast to yesterday, when the Race Committee waited for the very strong breeze to abate, the Race Committee delayed today's race for one and a half hours while waiting for the wind to arrive. When it did arrive it was a puffy, shifty southwesterly breeze that continued to shift during the race, causing the Race Committee to alter the course at almost every turning mark.

While many of the top teams were far back in the fleet at the first turning mark, Californians Howard Hamlin/Mike Martin took advantage of the first windshift to round the first turning mark in first place. They went on to win the race. Hyannis sailor Tyler Moore, racing with Scott Ikle, fought there way through the leaders by taking advantage of wind shifts on the windward legs, to pass Hamlin/Martin, but then lost them, to finish second. Ebbe Rosen/Olle Wenrup of Sweden finished 3rd, while Jeff Boyd/Martin tenHove of Canada were 4th. Fifth place went to brothers Henry Amthor/Doug Amthor of Hampton VA.

Overall results were shuffled somewhat. Trotman/Mills are firmly in first, but have not clinched the title. They have 24.7 points. 1993 World Champion Ian Barker, now racing with Daniel Cripps, retired from today's race, but remain the only team that can catch Trotman/Mills; they have 41.4 points. Hamlin/Martin have pulled up into 3rd place overall, very close to Barker/Cripps, with 41.7 points. Mike Zani/Peter Alarie of Rhode Island are in 4th place, with 52.4 points, while Ian Pinnell/Nick Powell of Great Britain are in 5th overall, with 60 points. This should make tomorrow's final race extremely interesting, with most of the top places up for grabs.

"We wanted to stay near Barker/Cripps today", said Trotman. "Tomorrow we will do the same thing. We have to prevent him from winning."
