Please send me information you think others may find useful, such as local events that might attract 505s, and "For Sale and Wanted" items. Also, if you change your email address, please let me know. Returned messages are a nuisance - and you fall off the list. (If you want to be taken off, let me know.)

    Forthcoming Events

    Datchet Reservoir Open Meeting CANCELLED

Regrettably the Open Meeting scheduled for 25/26 September at Datchet Reservoir has had to be cancelled because there is no water. The reservoir is undergoing a maintenance programme. The event will not be replaced.

Leigh and Lowton SC - 2/3 October 1999

With the cancellation of Datchet, the next open meeting is at Leigh and Lowton SC in Lancashire. This is the present or past home club of some well known 505 names such as Colclough (Bill, Margaret, Sue, Ben, and, oh yes, one called Peter), Mike Budd, Robin Boardman and - dare I say it? - Napier and Summersgill. Once described by Bob Fisher as "that grotty pond in the North", Pennington Flash has been transformed into one of the nicest inland sailing venues we have, with bird sanctuary, picnic spots and all.

To get there from the south, at J22 on the M6 take the A579 towards Lowton and Pennington. Cross the East Lancs Road (A580), into Lowton village for a mile, then, opposite St Luke's Church, turn left at the pub "The Church" (on the left) into Sandy Lane. After half a mile, the club is on the right, 40 yards before a sharp left hand bend in the road, on the south side of the flash. Incidentally, for those who do not know, a flash is a lake formed by mining subsidence - hence Bob Fisher's description, but come and see how it has changed.

First race: not before 1300 Saturday 2nd October. Camping is allowed at the club, and it is hoped that at least some visitors can be billetted with club members.

I hope as many members as possible will attend, including all those from north of Watford. A great Northern welcome will await you. Eamon Cuthbert says that a couple of decently kitted out Kyrwoods may be available to borrow, with crews.

    British Association AGM

The International 505 Class British Association AGM was held at Hayling Island during the Nationals "week". The following items are of note:
a.. The Committee was re-elected en bloc. (See the web site for details www.intersail.co.uk/505/ . While on the subject, for those who are not members, Andy Williams the membership secretary will gladly join you up - contact him at ajw@dircon.co.uk .)
b.. The meeting agreed to an increase in subscriptions: 25 pounds for full (boatowning) members, and 15 pounds for associate members. (If you pay by standing order, I suggest you adjust your instruction to your bank NOW to save a lot of hassle if you forget later.)
c.. Following the discussions and agreement at the International AGM, the meeting accepted the recommendation to allow the use of the Experimental Spinnaker at designated UK Ranking events next year. (Details are on the International website www.int505.org/ ; in brief, the experimental spinnaker may be 6m instead of 5m in the luff, and the spinnaker sheave on the mast may be 850mm higher than standard.) Note: This does not imply any acceptance of the bigger spinnaker into the class rules; the matter will be discussed at the next International AGM, and if agreed, put to ballot of all boat-owning members.
