UK 505 Circular, 31 October 1999 From rob.napier@clara.net. Please send me information you think others may find useful, such as Frostbite or other winter events that might attract 505s, and "For Sale and Wanted" items. I will try to get one more circular this year, towards the end of November.

    Forthcoming Events

Draycote Water SC - Inland Championship (re-sail) 6/7 November 1999

This is the last ranking open meeting of the year. Draycote Water is south of Rugby, near the end of the M45, with access to the club from the A426. From the south east, use the M1 and M45. At the roundabout at the end of the M45, turn hard right to Dunchurch, and right in the village on the A426. The entrance is on the right, in parkland. Please follow the signs. Whatever you do, please do not go the wrong way round the one-way system at the club - it makes an unnecessary traffic jam. I understand we will be put in the field next to the club for boat rigging and parking.

There is camping in the Country Park next door (£3.50 per night). And there are nearby B&Bs (at modest prices) and hotels. An accommodation list will be available.

Two races on Saturday, three on Sunday. First race on Saturday: 1230 prompt (remember, it gets dark very early now).

We are grateful to Draycote Water SC for helping out with this re-sail, and we look forward to coming back.

Grafham Water SC - Winter Series Weekend 20/21 November 1999

In past years, Grafham Water has put on a three-weekend winter series for 505s. This year, it has been reduced to one weekend: 20/21 November. This is a non-ranking event, but none-the-less very popular, and by concentrating it into one weekend, hopefully there will be a good turnout. First start I think will be 1100, 3 races per day.

    Recent Events

Leigh and Lowton SC - 2/3 October 1999

Sadly, only three boats turned up, so the event was cancelled, with those three sailing with the club fleet on Sunday. To add injury to insult, Eamon and Mark inverted and broke their mast. Here is what Eamon has to say:

The "event" was a bit of a failure in more ways than one. But I must thank Martin Goult for staying till Sunday and can only hope he was able benefit from the sailing that he did.The wind strength/conditions were very good at least. My thanks go to you for publicising the open and once again to Martin for making the journey (all the way from London).

    European Cup 1999 Results

The results of the European Cup 1999 have not been formally released. In due course they will be found at: http://ente.limmat.ch/505/sui/results/index.html. (The html file is quite big (ca 400k), so if you have a slow line you'd probably prefer to go to the download area and look out for the excel file, which is about 100k). When I last looked, the results there had not been corrected for errors (mostly unconsolidated results).

However, I have what I believe is the list that will be accepted as final. I am posting the full results on the UK website www.intersail.co.uk/505/. Only a handful of boats did the requisite three events, and they of course took the top places. Well done the Danes. Here is a summary of the top thirty, which covers almost all the boats counting three or two events:

For those interested, the rules are at http://ente.limmat.ch/505/sui/info/rules/ec_rules.htm. As you will see, it is the helmsman who counts.

Corrections to Ranking and Buddy Scheme Positions (Circular, 16 Sept.)

With apologies from the compiler, there was an omission in calculating the ranking standings given in the last circular. Also, there was uncertainty over whether European events would count, and if so, which. (There was discussion at the 1998 AGM suggesting that the ranking should be based on UK ranking events only.) The UK Committee has resolved the issue, and two lists were published in the recent Class News, one with European events and one without. The corrected list based on the UK ranking events to date are given below.
