International 505 French Championship

Eighty-three 505 teams from France, Germany, Great Britain, Switzerland, Sweden, and Denmark raced the 505 French National Championship, held April 1st-4th at the Yacht Club de Cavalaire. Cavalaire sur Mer is located on the French Riviera just west of Saint Tropez.

Races two through five were held in winds of Beaufort 3-4, while races one, seven and eight were somewhat lighter. Each day was sunny and many teams wore shorty wetsuits.

1998 Bavarian Champions Markus Mühlbauer/Angela Stenger won the first of the seven races, and closed with a 3,8, but a string of finishes below 20th dropped them to 11th overall.

Multiple time French 505 Champions Philippe Boite/Jean-Luc Muzellec (Philippe has won 15 times, Philippe and Jean-Luc have won 11 together) narrowly won the '99 edition over the team of past 470 world champion Wolfgang Hunger with crew Holger Jess. Past Fireball World champion and UK 505 champion Ian Pinnell with crew Nick Powell were very close behind in 3rd.

Most of the teams which competed at this French Championship are gearing up for the International 505 World Championship to be held July 3rd-10th at l'Ecole Nationale de Voile in Quiberon, Britany, France.
