505 National Championship & European Cup
Hayling Island Sailing Club,
9 - 12 September
Race 1, 9/9/99

Philippe Boite, the only visitor from France, wrote this after Race 1 of the British 505 National Championship:
"Aujourd'hui c'est un grand jour pour la FRANCE! We won the first race of the British Nationals with a new crew Régis Viateur. The wind was very light and chifty. I missed my start because I was at the end of the line and I didn't see the pathfinder. I was twenty metres behind him so I tacked and I went right side, it was perfect. I turned the first mark first! And the wind stopped 300 metres after. Just behind me Ian and Nick approach to me about 10 metres and I started with a very light wind.

When I jibe Mr Barker and Mark Upton and Debi with Dan just behind me, the wind was coming from the left. We turned the third mark again first, the wind was left and in the middle of the leg, the wind was right. Mark and Ian Barker were under me but I go quick on the right with them. Debi was more on the left. At the fourth mark the three boats were very closed to me.

The Jury stopped the race at the fifth mark and I was very happy with Régis.

Tomorrow is another day!"
