British National Championship & European Cup
Hayling Island Sailing Club, 9 - 12 September
Day 2, 10/9/99. Races 2, 3, and 4

Clive Robinson wins Race 2 easily.
Well done, Clive, and thank you for agreeing to write about today's racing:

I have been informed a few minutes ago that one of the privileges of sailing a 505 is that if you win a race at the Nationals you are presented with the opportunity of writing the day's race report. For the benefit of all readers, I promise not to win tomorrow. Three races were sailed back to back to back.

Race 2.
Course of sausage, triangle, and sausage. Wind strength force 1 and 2, direction Southeast. Gate was opened by the Payne/Masterman. For reasons unknown to this scribe, but possibly because of tidal variation across the course or small non-spotted wind shift the boat helmed by the writer and crewed by Gary Cawthorn, by banging hard left, arrived first at the first mark, followed by the Christopher Robinson/Tom Phillips (Christopher is the writer's son), and Payne/Masterman.

Race 2 Results
Robinson/Cawthorn
Payne/Masterman
Boite/Viateur

Race 3.

Controversial start to this race, again held in light marginal trapezing conditions. The strong tide had swept many of the boats away from the starting area. With only a six minute start sequence, many 505s failed to reach the start line. Pinnell/Powell banged hard left, and arrived a clear first at the first mark, and were never headed and won the race. For most of the race Upton-Brown/Mitchell were a clear second, until the last run, when Upton-Brown gybed off the opposite direction in an unsuccessful attempt to catch Pinnell, and let through Jarvis/Johnson.

Race 3 Result
Pinnell/Powell
Jarvis/Johnson
Upton-Brown/Masterman

Race 4.

Change of course to windward leeward. An increase in wind! Solid Trapezing. First time in the series. Little affect on the speed of Pinnell/Powell boat. Led from start to finish by banging left on the first beat, yet again.

Race 4 Result:
Pinnell/Powell
Upton-Brown/Masterman
Adams/Hunt
