The European Championship 2011 took place in Malcesine at the lake de Garda as a real top class event. ... and many other top 505 sailers!

The excellent race area of the Lake de Garda offered not only a spectacular surrounding with nice warm temperatures at 30 degree celsius but a wide palette of wind conditions: from strong winds to tricky light wind conditions.

The races have challenged also the physical conditions of the participants: 13 races were held on 5 days, in the morning with the Vento wind from the north (first signal at 7:55) and in the afternoon with the Ora from the south (first signal at 2pm).

German and Danish team monopolized the top 10 filling 9 of the 10 positions, Pinnel/Mitchel from Uk was 7th

The decisive race was the last race only:

After race 12, Schomäker/ Jess were 4 points behind Saugmann/ Ramsbaek (rank 1 at that time). Then with an excellent start Schomäker/ Jess were able to maintain a great position in the race. At the end of this tricky race 13 they achieved rank 6. Thus they were able to position themselves ahead of Saugmann/ Ramsbaek who had some bad luck on their end and only achieved the 27th rank.

Schomäker says „When we realized after the finish of the race that we really made it, we were just screaming and I was close to tears. I am so happy to stand in such an international big event for the first time on the awards podium. Holger Jess adds „We won probably because we were going with a very good allround speed, a good set up, good judgement and no true failures!"

Big respect deserve the two danish teams with Saugmann/Ramsbäk and the Bojsen-Möller brothers. They presented an extraordinary performance and achieved rank 2 and 3 of the EM.

Saugmann/Ramsbäk achieved the winning title on the total score of the EuroCups.

The joint training activities of Schomäker/ Jess with the new 505 entries Bogacki/ Meier-Kothe on the Kieler Förde paid out: the talented crew Bogacki/ Meier-Kothe reached on their first real big 505er Event rank 4. Also Heyer/ Salein displayed as best U25 team with rank 6 an extra-ordinary performance.

Our italians hosts organized a perfect European Championship and we can only compliment the race comittee, the jury and all the rest of the teams for a perfect race event.
