People and Partying

The inner temple at Mecca.
If Santa Cruz is Mecca for
North American 505 sailors,
Waterat Sailing Equipment
is the inner temple.

Europeans at home when I can
come to Santa Cruz

Danny Thompson (left) and
Andy Zinn, 4th place
Dave Shelton (left) and
Bruce Edwards, 3rd place

Howie Hamlin (left) and

Steve Bourdow (left) and
Mike Martin, 1st place
The Winners -
Steve Bourdow/Mike Martin

Bruce Edwards and
Dave Shelton. Bruce was
the key NAs organizer,
but that didn't slow them
down much, as they finished
3rd.

Boats and Dinghy Park (at the PCCs and at the NAs)

A Waterat Waterat detail.
I was mostly interested in the
barber hauler
Mikey (Mike And Lorna's boy)

Waterat 8266, Spaceman Spiff
a.k.a. Pink Boat
carbon fiber transom flaps,
G10 plate to stop rudder
fitting bolts chewing into
the transom
Jay Kuncl sands his sailing boots
because Larry Tuttle suggested it.
A simple three handled twing system.
This is on 7771, previously raced by
Hamlin/Martin, now raced by
Andy Beeckman/Ben Benjamin

A Buchan String (uncleat
halyard when you pull on retrieval
line) system using a custom carbon
fiber part
A Waterat molded compass bracket
on Bruce/Dave's boat. This bracket
will handle a variety of compasses,
not just the Racemaster seen here.
However, I would prefer the
RaceMaster mounted as far
forward as possible, so the
crew can read it easily
Mike Martin's Waterat/Martin high aspect ratio rudder

Spinnaker Pole launcher detail.
The white ring (covered with purple
tape) slides on the spinnaker pole.
The black shockcord from the ring
through the Ronstan Series 19 cheek
block running aft, pulls on the ring,
which holds the front end of the pole
next to the boom (when pole is stowed)
and helps pull the pole off the Spiro
fitting, when gybing or dousing.
Small stainless steel plate protects
the CB cap from the cheek blocks
on the CB handle
Another Buchan String implementation,
this time over the top of the CB trunk

Flattening reef detail on
Mike Martin's boat
Flattening reef from another view.
This system allows the outhaul to
be eased while still keeping the
flattening reef on.

What is it about college kids
not wearing gloves! Note that
this Vanguard 15 sailor has tape
matching her sweatshirt!
Bill and Dan's low aspect ratio,
low drag rudder on 6991. Well,
it was 22 years old!
