Arnaud Lucas and friend Nicholas raced the O'Brien's boat, John Hauser teamed up with Ryan Breymaier in John's boat, Ali raced with Pascal Buckley (who rode the bus in from NYC for the day again) in Ali's KISS Rondar, while Barney Harris turned up just in time to team up with Steve Liberman in Ali's Waterat.
The 505s tuned up for awhile and then joined the Jet 14s for races (the Jets had started racing in the meantime), and eventually got more races in than the Jets.
Three of the four teams won races. If we were awarding prizes, first should go to Arnaud and Nicholas who were actually the only boat racing with correct sail numbers... John was using 8012 on 7346, Ali had 8263 but on the 8734 boat, Barney had 7200 on the 8263 boat.
Barney and Steve used the new experimental larger spinnaker -- currently nicknamed the Whomper -- to good effect on the runs (BTW, we invite other nickname suggestions). Despite not having raised the hoist on the mast, and just lowering the spinnaker pole a bit (the sail is 1 meter longer on the luffs), Barney and Steve were passing boats frequently, despite it being a short leg. Even in the light air, the big kite seemed quick dead down wind. Barney noted that it had an even bigger advantage over the normal kite when he reached up a little... and this was in about 5 knots of breeze. The color scheme -- black, teal, green and several other colors -- is .... interesting...
Barney commented:
"the larger spinnaker was interesting. it was so big that it would touch the water when hanging over the bow. The legs where too short, the wind too flukey, and our racing objective too highly focused on clobbering Ali to really evalutate the bigger chute - it did seem to not add much in the way of speed sailing dead down wind, But when heated up just a bit however it was a pretty dramatic. I am VERY interested in seeing how the boat with bigger chute performs in breeze with correct pole and hoist geometry."
After the 11 race workout, everyone enjoyed Celeste Simond's chili (even Barney enjoyed it) and free beers (sodas for those not partaking of alcohol).
We hope for some larger turnouts in the second half of the frostbite series, with two more 505s (Liebermand and Romey) joining the fleet.
