USA 505 Fleet 19
Annual Meeting
Minutes

Present: Jahn Tihanknsy, Sterg Papadakis, J Bergquist, Mike Renda, Ken Jacobs, Carlos Linares, Bob Patterson, Alexander Meller. Krysia Pohl was there for the start but had to leave, and Mike Breton joined us part way through. There was a brief discussion on how to get more Fleet 19 members to show up at a meeting. This was a better turnout than the last meeting at Bob Patterson's home, though no one from WRSC was there, and several SSAers were not there either.
  1. Schedule

The schedule is mostly worked out, with attempts to coordinate Region I and Region II. The current schedule looks like:

  2. SSA Fleet Boat

The SSA 505 fleet members were nearly unamimous in wanting to keep a fleet boat at SSA. There was brief discussion about whether Cardiac Arrest was the right boat, but it was agreed that it was better than any other alternative. Tim Williams is interested in keeping the boat at SSA and racing it occasionally, and a majority of the SSA fleet members present were prepapred to contribute to the cost of storing the boat. The current sails, a North Kevlar main, Dacron jib and extended chicken spinnaker are pretty useless. J plans to contribute a spinnaker (an extended 5 meter luff spinnaker). Ali bought and mounted a new HA rudder for the boat. It could use a better CB. Macy provided a main and jib that are probably better than what is currently on the boat.

  3. Other Ideas

    One Day Events
In the e-mail discussion leading up to the meeting, several people expressed the desire of having some one day events. The SSA fall series will be a one day event.

    Coaching
In addition to the 2 or 3 WRSC coaching dates, we could have coaching at some regattas, especially the one day fall series. Ethan, Greg Fisher, Fuzz Spanake and Luke Shingledecker will be approached. We would need a powerboat, either for the club, or from J-World. If Jahn is not racing 505s he can coach too. Coaching during events is OK, but we also need some coaching not while racing.

  4. Delegation

Bob Patterson has agreed to continue as 505 Fleet 19 and SSA 505 fleet captain, but we discussed the need to delegate, both overall, and for the ECCs.

For the ECCs, we have the following needs:

Overall we also need people to do:

  5. SSA 505 Fleet Wants and Needs

Turnout. The only SSA boats not racing were Rene de la Rie's 8085, and Rick Cassell's Rondar. Rene was in Europe most of the summer, then hurt his leg, and was again away during this last regatta. He plans to be active next year, and has been very active other years. Rick has not yet had the boat in the water.John Hauser's boat should be repaired soon, and back at the club.

Winter Sailing. After considerable discussion, I believe we agreed to blow off Jan 1 through mid or late February, and pick Saturdays -- typically every second Saturday -- before and after that. We should have a backup plan if it is too cold or too windy.

  6. Prospects

  7. Fleet Dues

It was agreed to reduce fees to $20 (used to be $25). Everyone would be encouraged, but not badgered into paying. Funds to go towards engraving current trophies. We also need a "most events" trophy to the owner/boat/team that does most Region II events (the road warrior trophy) and a "most improved" trophy, regatta beer, entry fee subsidies. Hey what about Fordham sponsoring a regatta? J to investigate. J also volunteered to be fleet treasurer.

Ali is completing the annual fleet 19 participation spreadsheet. The boat/owner that turned up at most events was Bob Patterson with 8 local events. Congratulations to Bob! J crewed in several of those events, and then sailed events in both 7080 and 6987, so may not have been counted properly.

  8. Fleet Growth

How about a Invitational where you have to sail with a newcomer. A one day event, not too big a commitment. A one day on a weekend, or an evening (would this work?) event.

TESOD - good for visibility, not for explaining or training. How about we sail Tuesday evenings, all agree to do one race, and break off and line up otherwise.. .if it is light we can stick with TESOD.

Navy Regattas - what did we decide to do here?

The key was to find sailors, boats was not as much of a problem.

Invite sailors to sail in our boats.

Target is post college sailors... 25

Ideas for recruiting included hitting up post collegiate alumni from our respective colleges. Or at least mine (Tufts).

The coed may be the newcomer regatta.

    Need competent sailors

V15s e-mail NoR for their events to ICSA and or MEISA; we could do the same.

What about a college sailors invitational? Talk with Ann Campbell MEISA

Lots of 505 T-shirts. The idea is specifically to have something cool that people would want to wear. I think we need to come up with a design and see how many people want one, then get a few more to give away as door prizes, extra trophies, etc.
