505 Mid Atlantics

Hampton YC
October 2-3

Report One by Henry Amthor

This year the 2004 Mid Atlantics were hosted by Fleet 8 & Hampton YC... We had crews drive and fly down from New England,Maryland and Northern VA. It was great to see some new faces in the fleet including Krysia Pohl sailing with Ali, Ryan Costello with Drew, Greg Hryniewicz with Macy & Gordon from Ginny with Clayton...Also coming out of retirement was FD Olympic star Alan Kilgore sailing w/ Tom.

The festivities started Friday afternoon w/ a tune-up session sailed in a 7 to 10kt easterly. Later the Moore family held a BBQ / Pizza party at there new home overlooking the night lights of Hampton Roads..(Thank You Jane)..

Saturday brought a short postponement on shore to let a few rain cells pass. Then a Nice 18kt westerly filled in for the 1st race that caught a few boats off guard & went for a morning swim. Just as the last boat finished the breeze eased off to about 6kts. This allowed the northern bay teams to feel more at home. After the 1st day Tim & Bill were leading, followed closely by Tyler & Steve. That evening the Sparkman's had the fleet over to there home for a Southern style Oyster Roast ..(Thank You Ann).. Sunday a small front moved thru that left us w/ a 15kt easterly.. Again after the 1st race the breeze backed off to about 6 to 8kts for the next 4/races....Just as the last race was started the breeze built back up to about 12 -15kts.. Congratulations to Tim (The new Dad) & Swoop for there well sailed victory. They had a great battle w/ Tyler & Steve right up to the final race. They were also awarded the Mariners Cup sponsored by the Newport News Mariners Museum for outstanding one design sailing in southern VA. Big thank you to PRO-Jane Moore & regatta organizer Leigh Morgan who gave up sailing her HOD on Saturday to work w/ Jane as RC. Also Bill Warren, Charles & Anna Smith on the mark boat & Michelle Garn and here fishing buddy's for there support on the race course...

Report Two by Tyler Moore

There was a lot riding on this years Mid-Atlantics and there were some scores to settle.

  1. After winning the spring event, could Ali and Krysia come down and make it a clean sweep, humiliating the local boys?
  2. Could Allan Kilgore handle the speed after being mothballed behind a desk for what seemed like an eternity?
  3. Would Clayton make it to the starting line?  Would he show his former skipper a thing or two about steering?  Would the crews union then have more ammo to blast their puny skippers with?
  4. Would Drew pull an Alarie by winning with a rookie skipper?
  5. After winning the NE Championships, would Tim & Bill's excellent adventure continue?  Would they have an un-defeated season?  Or could we count on them choking like their beloved Red Sox.
  6. Now that he is a father of 2, would Doug have the stamina to survive 9 races.
All these questions and more were about to be answered.   On the sail out Saturday morning, the conditions looked promising for Ali & Krysia.  In other words, it was light.  People took their time getting out figuring that the RC would wait for everyone.  What they didn't realize was that the ladies on the RC would wait for no man.  The 1st gun sounded right at noon!  Sorry Clayton & Gordon.   Being the (rabbit) and figuring on the usual right shift, Tyler & Steve figured the 1st race would be theirs.  This would be the 1st clue that the wind wasn't going to do what it was supposed to.  Tyler & Steve rounded the pin right at the gun only to almost be cut in half by Barney & George who were screaming starboard and were quite irate that Tyler & Steve ruined their perfect pin end (Line start).   Halfway up the beat beat the wind turned on and went left propelling Macy & new crew Greg into the lead.  They never looked back and left the rest in their dust.  The only casualty was Krysia & Ali who ripped their chute and had to go in.  Doesn't Mike always carry an extra for just such a situation?   By the end of day one, Tim and Bill had a 1 point lead but it was still anyone's game.  Saturday night was the Sparkman's party with roasted oysters and fried turkey.  Surely this would set those northern boys back.  If only we had some hot peppers for them!   Ryan & Drew were starting to get the hang of things having won the 1st race on day 2 .  If they continued that trend, Herls would have start shopping for a new ride. Later Sunday it got tough.  The wind went light, the shifts went big and the racing was tight.  In the end, Tim & Bill caught a really excellent ride and surfed out to a commanding 10 boatlength lead which they carried to victory.  I guess practicing really is over-rated.
