Photographs from the 1995 World Championship

• St. Michaels Mount, from the sea. Photo taken from a returning 505.St. Michael's Mount is an island most of the time, but a causeway is revealed at low tide. Lord St. Levan is the President of the Mount's Bay Sailing Club, and Lord and Lady St. Levan were sponsors of the World Championship.

• Mike Martin & Howard Hamlin preparing Spaceman Spiff. Howard keeps Spaceman Spiff in Europe, where it is easily shipped to World Championships.

• Tyler Moore & Ryan Cox. The intercollegiate dream team with intercollegiate sailor of the year '94 driving, and intercollegiate sailor of the year '95 crewing. Moore/Cox were 5th in the 1995 505 World Championship.

• Nick Trotman & Michael Mills. Nick and Mike sailed the oldest boat in the fleet, Lindsay 7318, to a 9th place finish. There was a crowd of people around the boat every evening, amazed that a 15 year old boat was so competitive.

• Mike Punnet & Scott Ikle. Check out the beach! Several times, boats were sailed up the beach on their dolly/trolly. One person steers the dolly, while the other sits in the boat, weight aft to balance the tongue, and on the high side to keep the boat flat. The "driver" runs as fast as they can up the beach, just trying to keep up with the dolly.

St. Michael's Mount dominated the event, as we launched next to it every day, sailed out through it's wind shadow, and looked for it after the race, to indicate which direction the club was in. Lord and Lady St. Levan invited the competitors to the castle for sherry and a tour one evening. Several fit competitors were so nackered by the climb, they needed several glasses of sherry to recuperate.....

Her Royal Highness watched the last race of the pre-worlds from the water. Unfortunately, the 505 class was not able to fit a 505 sail into her schedule; perhaps next time. HRH is President of the RYA.

• The US container packing team assisted by a very elegantly dressed Australian. Are these guys going to make it to the presentation dinner in time? The 505 class recently began having slightly more formal prize dinners. Many competitors wore black tie, but as you would expect with the 505 class, many also wore slightly less formal atire. Victory and black tie did not hinder Winning crew Bill Masterman - gracious in victory - from leading songs over dinner. Fortunately for Bill, plans to throw him in, black tie and all, were put aside when someone realized that the drop from Land's End (site of the prize banquet) to the water, was substantial, and there were rocks in the way.
