  • Santa Cruz Spring Open

    Santa Cruz Yacht Club hosted their Spring 505 Open over the weekend of May 30/31 and 21 boats arrived to race. Conditions were a little more over cast than we would have liked and the wind was therefore not giving us the sort of conditions we all wanted to practice in for the Worlds that are now less than 3 months away.

  • Dinghy Sailing Magazine article

    Thanks to the Publisher of DSM, we now have a PDF version of the April article that assesses the "Top 10 U.K. Dinghy designs of all time" and rates them. It's conclusion is:- "The 505 is the best dinghy of all time - Head and Shoulders above the rest"

  • Boat Registrations

    Due to non-compliance, either on the part of the Builder, Dealer or Agent, in relation to the payment of registration fees, the following boats, are not compliant with our Class Rules:

    8924
    8932
    8962
    These boats are not, therefore, eligible to enter regattas as 505s and should only be included in results and ranking listings once their registration fees have been received by the International 505 Class Association.

  • NorthVaal Championships

    13 top teams contested this year’s 505 Northvaal championships at Aeolians on the Vaaldam. Many of the teams are already gearing up for the World championships in Denmark next year and see these big regattas as perfect early preparation for their campaigns. The regatta was well run with 9 solid races in all conditions, testing crews and equipment to the max.


    Saturday, 25th of April, started off with some excellent breeze. 4 races were sailed back to back and this made for some excellent racing. Race one started off with switchy conditions with team Holm managing to get their noses into first. Hans Rogotzki and Alan Haylett came in, in second place followed by the Funkes and the grand masters Rob Willcox/Ditmar Herrman. Albrecht Holm and CJ Milln came in 5th followed by the father / son combination of Alex and Warwick Ham. Race 2 saw the wind build slightly and this resulted in some spectacular reaches around the course.

    In race 2, first place went to the Funkes followed by the Holms and Rogotzki/Haylett combination. As the regatta progressed it seemed that any one of these three teams could have a chance to win the event. Willcox/Herrman combination was always close behind in 4th with position 5, 6 and 7 being alternated between team Ham, Klaas/le Roux and Hom/Milln. So after day one, the Funkes were narrowly leading from Holm/Holm followed closely by Rogotski and Haylett. At this point it was anybody’s regatta and with two days of sailing still to come, prospects were high.

    Sunday saw the wind prior to the cold front continuing meaning that it would build steadily out of the North west throughout the day. Rob M’crystal did not waste any time with getting the race under way and by 9.30 race 5 had started. The Holms showed some excellent speed and led the fleet around the course followed closely by Willcox/Herrman in second and Rogotski/Haylett in 3rd. The Funkes had an early capsize in the switchy conditions which put them into 4th followed Klaas/le Roux, Biagio/Quarmby and Ham /Ham. Race 6 saw the breeze pick up nicely and again some excellent sailing conditions where being experienced. The stronger wind meant some exciting racing around the course with capsizes happening all around. Again the competition at the top of the fleet was strong with the Funkes winning from Rogotzki/Haylett followed by the Holm’s in 3rd and the Ham’s in 4th. Race 7, just before lunch, also made for some serious racing with Klass/le Roux, Holms, Willcox /Herrman and Funkes all showing how the 505 should be sailed. Carnage at the gybe mark did however change the lead with both Klaas/le Roux and Holms capsizing letting Rogotzki/Haylett, Funkes and Willcox/Herrman get away with 1,2,3 respectively. After lunch two more races were sailed with the Funkes securing first places in both followed in second by the Holms and the third place going to Ham/Ham and Willcox/Herrman, respectively.

    On Monday racing was abandoned due to light and shifty conditions which meant that the results on Sunday evening were final, with the Peter and Thomas Funke winning from Rudolph and Ferdi Holm followed in third by Hans Rogotzki and Alan Haylett. 9 races, two discards, 13 boats was a turnout and resulted in an excellent event. Thank you to Aeolians for hosting the 505 class and to Rob M’crystal and his team for taking time to run the bridge.

  • 505s in Western Cape

    The 2009 Western Cape championships saw a record 11 boat fleet compete for the title. There were many talented sailors at the event including the likes of Dave Hudson, David Rae, Paul Willcox, Rudolph Holm, Kyle Klaas, Nick Pratt and Peter Funke but to name a few. Racing was extremely close and the regatta was a huge success! The 2009 505 Western Cape championships got underway on the 10th of April 2009 with 11 boats entering the event. The 505 class has seen a steady growth in numbers over the past three years and with the amount of interest from all over, measures to get new boats into the country and to even build them locally are being discussed. Anyway, enough of the promo, lets get to the event.

    Day 1 started in light to medium conditions with two races being sailed. Racing was extremely close with most of the fleet finishing within 4 minutes of each other. The current national champion, Kyle Klaas and Warwick Ham, dominated the fleet scoring two bullets followed closely by the Holms, Rudi and Ferdi, with Peter and Thomas Funke in third and Paul Willcox / Tony Norris and Mark Biagio / Scott Quarmby, alternating the 4th spot in the respective races. Dave Hudson and David Rae and Albreccht Holm and CJ Milln also had a good battle for 5th and 6th respectively. Newcomers to the class, Nick Pratt and Stuart Lawson showed the two Ballatyne teams the way around the course followed by the sailor who improved most throughout the regatta, Ruan de Hart.

    Day two dawned with the prospect of heavy breeze but this was only to materialise a bit later. Race three got underway with Willcox/Norris leading the fleet around the course in light and switchy conditions. The Holms managed to hold on to second place followed closely by the Funke brothers in third. Albrecht Holm/ Milln managed to pull in, in 4th place followed closely by Klaas/Ham and the Hudson/Rae combination. Race 4 started and the breeze picked up throughout the course of the race which saw some of the boats capsizing but more importantly some high speed stuff once the weather mark was rounded. The Funke team managed to secure their first victory of the regatta followed closely by Willcox/Norris and Hudson/Rae. The Holms brothers finished in a good fourth place closely followed by Biagio/Quarmby in 5th. Racing was suspended for the rest of the day, much to everyone’s disappointment but then again, the best was still to come.

    The weather report on day three predicted much of the same conditions as for the previous day so all of the crews readied themselves for some serious heavy weather sailing. On day three 5 races were sailed with 2 wins going to the Funke team while another two went to Willcox/Norris and one to the Holm brothers. The racing on day three was amazing with the top 5 boats chasing each other around the course throughout the day and positions varying and altering rapidly if mistakes were made. Unfortunately Hudson and Rae experienced some gear failure during a spinnaker reach and had to retire from the regatta while misfortune also plagued the national champion, Klaas/Ham. From the regatta one has learned that one can never be too prepared for 505 racing. Fittings, sheets and sails need to be checked and maintained / replaced at all times in order to keep MR MURPHY away.

    The final day of the regatta saw three races being sailed and with the havoc of the previous day some of the teams could not make the start. Racing was again close with first positions being shared amongst the Funke’s, Holm/Milln and Holm/Holm respectively. Ruan de Hart showed some excellent progress beating Grant Ballantyne / Mike Robb in the last two races. This was the first time in 5 years, so well done Ruan!

    The final results were as follows:

    All in all, the regatta was a huge success and we as the 505 class would like to thank SAS/ZVYC and all other parties involved for hosting a super event. Hopefully, we will be able to increase the 505 attendance at the event next year and in so doing make it one of the healthiest sailing classes in South Africa. I look forward to seeing you at the Northvaals on the 25th to 27th of April 2009, Aeolians, Vaaldam.


  • European Championships 2008 – Revised Result

    At the Pre- Worlds / European Championships held at Palermo, Italy last November the 1st and 2nd place finishers in the overall results were Ethan Bixby / Erik Boothe USA (7 points) and Jens Findel / Johannes Tellen GER (10 points).

    The title of European Champion and the European Championship Trophy was awarded to Jens and Johannes based on the assumption that aNon-European resident was ineligible to be declared the winner.

    This outcome has been challenged and the I.E.C. referred the matter to the Chairman of ISAF Rules Committee for a ruling.

  • 2° TransAlp Cup 1-3 May

    2° TransAlp Cup Campione del Garda 1-3 May 2009

    The 2nd TransAlp Cup regatta took place in Riva del Garda at Campione, this time we shared the event with the Contender Class fleet.

    In the morning of May 1 we arrived for registration at Campione del Garda, the surrounding mountains were white with snow, the sun was shining bringing the air temperature in the 20°c and the lake was white, swept by 25-30 knots of Peler (North wind). What a sight!

    The April 2009 issue of "Sailing Dinghy Magazine" - a U.K. magazine dedicated to Dinghy sailing - has a fantastic article on the 505 in this issue.  

    It assesses the "Top 10 U.K. Dinghy designs of all time" and rates them. 

    It's conclusion is:- "The 505 is the best dinghy of all time - Head and Shoulders above the rest".

  • Bryan Price - 1963 World Champion Dies

    Bryan Price - 505 World Champion 1963

    I wish to inform the International 505 community of the passing of Bryan Price on 23rd March 2009 at the age of 78years.

    Bryan, together with Chris Hough, won the 1963 Worlds in Larchmont, New York.

    He was the second Australian to become a World Champion in yacht racing and was instrumental in bringing the World Championships to Adelaide in 1966.

    He was Chairman of the Organising Committee for this series which was the first World Championship Yachting event to be held in Australia and indeed the Southern Hemisphere.

    Bryan was diagnosed with acute leukemia in November 2008 and despite his gritty determination and stubborness in fighting the complaint he succumbed on Monday 23rd March.

    Those of us that knew Bryan would recognise that he was a unique individual.

    He was motivated, energetic, enthusiatic and successful in everything he did.

  • Sad news - Yves Zéguin

    It is with sadness that we advise you that Yves Zéguin,  founder of the Belgian 505 Association and Belgian Association President passed away on December 19th following a brain hemorrhage.

    We are grateful for his contribution to the class, he will be missed.

    The sympathies of all 505 sailors go to his wife Andrée,family and friends.
