• Establish a working group of 5O5 and venue representatives to propose initiatives to reduce waste and the event’s impact on the environment.
  • Promote the initiatives widely on news releases as an example to others.
  • Initiatives could include:
    • No single use plastic bottles, cups or food containers to be available at the venue.
    • Filtered water to be conveniently available.
    • Include in NOR and ongoing news messages reminding competitors they will not be able to buy bottled water and must bring their own drink bottles.
    • Avoid providing multi use plastic drink bottles at the regatta but have them available for purchase. Profit on these sales to be used for environmental purposes. eg renting drinking fountains.
    • Avoid disposable cups, glasses and plates (eg for after racing beer and pasta.
    • Adequate rubbish bins labelled as to what should  go in them.
    • Enlist local authorities in the targets.
    • Reduce food waste and consider donating left over food where possible or send home with volunteers.
    • Avoid individually wrapped products.

    • measure results and produce a summary to improve on for next time.
